It is Sunday now and I wrapped up Design Week on Friday evening with the WeMake Celebrates Party!

DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day7_1

The WeMake party for Design Week is filled with little activities for you to do (In my video, which will be posted soon, shows some of that), delicious local beer, music from a local high school, and an auction of hand crafted bird houses by select makers to support arts and music education. Pretty awesome!DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day7_4 DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day7_3 DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day7_2They even had posters you could buy, that were made by specially invited designers. Their only rules for this project were to only use Red, Green and Blue colors in their piece at a certain dimension.  I would love to one day be invited to work on a project like that! I bought the one at the end… I cannot wait to make it part of my home decor!

JehnGlynn_WeMakePdxPoster

I had so much fun, I got to hang out with friends, make new friends and just relax and enjoy after a very busy week! I cannot wait to finish up my design week video to share with you guys as well! Make sure you are subscribed to my Youtube Channel so you don’t miss it!

Thank you for going along with me on my journey during Design Week. It really means a lot to me. I truly love sharing my experiences with others, as well as learning about everyone else’s experiences. I really believe it is what forms relationships and builds community. This week I had the lucky opportunity to get a peek inside some of other designers and creatives minds, which really is a true treat.

Some main takeaways from the week:

Personal Passion Projects:

  • Be yourself.
  • Create from the heart.
  • Create for yourself.

Client Work:

  • Research the market in depth before you begin doing any concepts. Especially if you do value based pricing.
  • Get out and ask the users what they really want. Example: Just because a client asks you to do a tri-fold brochure, does not mean it is the right thing to design. Get out and ask the users if they even want a brochure, maybe what will satisfy them is something completely different.
  • The client is not always right. Educate your client!
  • I don’t charge enough.
  • Do work YOU Want to do. You don’t have to always say yes!

Being a creative:

  • Just because someone doesn’t like what you are doing, does not mean you should stop! Their opinion is not the end all be all!
  • Try to pay attention to what YOU like about design and work towards following that path.
  • Inspiration is everywhere. Look beyond design to find it!

I will see you guys in my coming video! I hope you have a great day – thanks again for reading!

– Jehn

Tonight I went and saw Stefan Sagmeister do this talk on happiness. I have seen him talk a bunch of times on happiness, but only through videos online. Even though his content was pretty much the same… it was what happened after the show that was the most magical.

But first, on with the show. Well, let me back up… I have been a fan of Stefan for a very very long time. I am semi obsessed with album art and Lou Reed, and when I learned he did art work for Lou Reed back in in 1996, I was instantly hooked. The album was full of handwritten typography that I could just not get enough of. So, it was really cool getting to meet someone whose work you have been paying attention to for years.

Ok, now on with the show.

portlanddesignweek_sefansagmeister_jehnglynn

What I enjoyed about this talk, was that it was not about design. It was about self-exploration within himself that turned into him sharing everything he learned with the world, and in turn, I am sure has made an impact on peoples lives.

Through this exploration of happiness, he wanted to create a movie documenting three months of his life while trying three proven methods of happiness (meditation, therapy and drugs), just to see if it made an impact on his life. However, he said the movie was so much harder than he anticipated due to his lack of skill in the quality of work he wants to produce. Which means the film has not been finished and he talked about this very openly. He said it has been a real struggle for him mentally and has really weighed him down, and has been really hard. It was so nice hearing someone, who has accomplished a lot of what they have set out to do, that they feel bummed out about things as well. That they cannot complete projects because they don’t know everything. It was a very real moment, as was the whole evening. Stefan is just like one of us, a human being.

As you may know, Stefan takes an entire year off every seven years to work on things he does not normally have the time to work on. During the seven years he is working, he constantly makes a list of things he wants to do during that year. When the year is approaching, he goes down the list, crosses off things that are not interesting anymore and creates a plan for a year. He said that he tried to not create a plan for one of the years, and it was not worth while in his opinion. He did not get out of it what he had hoped.

“I didn’t have a plan. The outside world did all the planning for me… I answered e-mails all year.” – Stefan Sagmsiester

I can totally relate to the idea of having a plan, even if it is to enjoy some leisure time. I also think it is more a matter of making decisions for yourself to not do certain things. Even if it is as little as not picking up your phone while you are watching a great movie, or crossing things off of your list that you once thought you wanted to do, but don’t really have interest to do anymore.

He ended his talk by saying that something that has helped him consistently in his quest to discover different levels of happiness, is by every night, he writes down three things that worked that day, that made him happy. I think it is only appropriate that I end his post with my three. Please leave your three in the comments below, I would love to hear them!

What worked today:

1. I came home from working, with the full intention of doing two design week events tonight… and nearly passed out on my couch. I was so exhausted from the week. So, I stayed home and nurtured my soul a little bit. It was nice and very necessary!

2. Starting my “I don’t know” project. More on that later!

3. I listened to a new album today recommended by a friend. If you love Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, you’ll love this!

Oh, wait… I told you that something magical happened at the end. I went to the VIP mixer afterward and hung out with incredible designers, had unbelievable conversations about real things and I truly feel like I made some friends out of the night! Also, Stefan talked to every single person in that room for as long as that person wanted to talk to him. He was so patient and incredibly thoughtful with everything he said and how he treated every person in that room. It really was magical… but not as magical as Stefan being in a vlog with me! Here is a screenshot of the vlog – HE IS SO DAMN TALL! Half the vlog has his face cut off, haha! Keep an eye out for my video on Sunday, I will include a clip in there!

Let me know your three things that worked for you today in the comments!

Don’t forget how awesome you are :)!

See you tomorrow – I am doing something really fun for the final Design Week adventure, so stay tuned!

Thank you for reading,

Holy shit. It’s only Tuesday? That means three more days of feeling the way I am feeling right now (enlightened, exhausted and excited… all at once)? THE THREE E’S? I’M IN! *thumbs up!*

Tonight I attended Curiosity Club Panel Discussion “This is It – Or is It? “ at Hand-Eye Supply

IMG_1950

DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day4

I did not even tweet during this event, because I was so fixated on every word the panel was saying. I, however, filled my notebook with quotes after quotes after quotes. Which I am going to share with you!

Loading

I didn’t tweet during the last event because I literally was hanging onto every word that panel said. So, I wrote it all down instead. Hehe :) #dwpdx

View on Instagram

The premise of this panel discussion was for everyone to talk about their ‘ah ha’ moments of when they realized they were on the right path in their creatives lives & then to also talk about those moments in life, where they realized they were not going down the right path for themselves. All of that was talked about, but I wanted to share my favorite moments and quotes with you, from each panelist!

Kate was the first to talk, she is an illustrator and educator. She started off the talk by introducing herself and she spoke very candidly about how she was originally a mass communication major and pretty quickly realized, that it was not for her, burnt her mass comm book (no, she really did!) and switched her major to English.

“I realized that I had control of my education. I can drop this stupid major and do what I want to do” – Kate Bingaman-Burt

It was in that moment, that Kate realized that SHE was the one in control of HER life.

“Be an active participant in your life” – Kate Bingaman-Burt

“Make the path you want to walk along” – Kate Bingaman-Burt

I loved listening to Kate talk, not only because she exudes energy and is a great speaker, but you can tell that everything she is working on in her life right now, are things she truly cares about. As someone who is intentionally shifting what their life can look like in the next several years (me), I really admire that about her. For the first time in my life, I feel like the path I have been working to create for myself has finally caught up with me and I can wholeheartedly say that I also am working on things that I am proud of and excited about. Honestly, we CAN create the lives we want. It is something I preach constantly in my everyday life, in my videos, literally everywhere. Ask my friends, I don’t shut up about it and I felt like I was standing with the panel tonight on that curated path we are all building for ourselves. It was really f*cking cool!

The next seat in the panel was Dave, from 33 Books. Dave ran a beer blog and a brewing company with his friends several years ago. During this period in his life, he really wanted a way to track the beers he has drank and loved, so he created these this lovely, handy book, called 33 Beers.

“I wanted to make something for myself” – Dave Selden

In a month, he sold out of the 33 beers books and since then, he has created several other books for cheese, wine, cigars, etc. The books have totally taken off and people love them! The really beautiful part of Dave’s story, is that this idea really came from a place of need and enjoyment for him. Which has resulted in a need he has found in the market. The other cool thing, is that once the user has experienced the book, they will also feel enjoyment from it just like Dave did! Full circle shit right there. :)

Next in line was Nial, from Hovercraft Amplifiers.  Nial talked about that on his path to discovery in terms of what he wanted to do for his career, he really wanted two things; to feel contentment and satisfaction. He measured this by seeing if each opportunity that came his way aligned with three things: money, fun and art. He says he specifically looks for that “F*CK YES!” moment in life and that he rarely works on something unless it hits all three of them.

Nial said that it has taken him years and years of introspective thinking and really treating his life experiences as a blender to create what is important to him right now. I felt pretty energized listening to him talk about his life as a whole. It made me think how important it is to stay aware of where your life is now, where it has been and where it is going. Staying aware plays such a major part in the decisions we make today, as they will play a role in where our future does actually end up.

DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day4_2

Niko from Plazm Magazine was next up and he spoke about his climb to the top in the corporate world as a designer. In short, Niko has had a very successful career in the corporate-adding-letters-to-the-end-of-your-title, sort of way. While he was explaining his background to us, his face was not lit up at all and he mentioned several times how meaningless the work had become for him.

“As you go up the ladder, you do less and less of what got you there.” – Niko Courtelis

As Niko started talking about the fact that he really started focusing on spending more time working on his hobbies, his face lit up entirely! You could tell how passionate he felt about the work he is doing now. The really interesting thing that happened, was that the more and more he focused on his hobbies, the more opportunities in that realm came about. Which has lead him down a path that allows him to fully focus on the things he loves and has a career doing it.

I find that time and time again, the “success” stories that I hear from individuals all stem from a place of interest within themselves. Meaning, they are all working towards and on something they truly believe in, and if they worked hard enough, figured out how to actually make it work, they can and do make a living off of it. Pretty freaken brilliant!

The last person in the panel was Dee Williams, from Portland Alternative Dwellings. Dee talked a lot about the steps we go through during problem solving and creating.

” 1. I think I got it! This is AWESOME!
2. Oh. This is really hard.
3. This sucks. Ugh!
4. I suck. I can’t do this!
5. I can figure this out…
6. This is awesome! I got this! ”
– Dee Williams

It’s so true, isn’t it? I could totally relate while she was going down that list! She went on to say that you can really relate it to any situation in your life. To me, it made me think that when I am working through steps 2-4, I just need to remember that it will get better, life always moves on and I will be OKAY!

“I feel like I am always fumbling, but I always come back to leaning in to knowing that it is okay and it will always be okay.” – Dee Williams

This panel had to be the most captivating and awesome experience yet at design week for me. I felt like I was in a room full of people who understood how I think and how I feel on a day to day basis. I also felt like I was in a room full of people who have taken windy roads to get to where they are today, they stayed true to who they are and are now able to spend their days working on things they believe in and love, and what could be better than that?

HI FIVE to that! :)

Thank you for reading this and going on this week long adventure with me!

YOU are great and a gift within itself! Don’t ever forget that!

See you tomorrow,

Jehn

Whoa. Today was a busy day! THREE events! I am feeling a bit tired, but am excited to share with you my day… and what an eye opening, shift thinking, type of day it was!

The first event I went to was “Designing for Social Change” put on by The Metropolitan Group.

I got a little lost finding the place and while I was struggling looking at my map, someone comes up to me and asks “are you looking for The Metropolitan Group?”. I was so thankful she spoke up, because we quickly found where we needed to go. Once we got to our final destination, the desk asked us our names and I said “Jehn Glynn, G-L-Y-N-N”. And the girl who I met outside looked at me and goes “So, this might be creepy, but my name is Kristen & I follow you on twitter. I participated in your #heyjehnlook project on your last typography video!” I wanted to give her a hug. She was the first person, who wasn’t in my family, who participated in that project and it really meant a lot to me. Right after Kristen and I finished gushing and laughing about meeting twitter friends in real life, some guy says “not to add to the creepiness… but I am the voice behind DWPDX. You sent me the direct message yesterday and we communicated,” So funny! Met two twitter friends today! I knew after that, i was ready to take on the day!

So, I have been interested in exposing myself to the inner working of the social change world for a while now. I always knew my favorite clients to work with were one that I felt connected with, that I felt like I aligned with their goals and purpose and ones that overall, did good for others. Also, my really good friend, Sarah, is all about social change – So, when I saw this event as an option, I had to sign up and boy am I glad I did!

Upon sitting down, I discovered a “goodie bag” that had a beautifully crafted and curated workbook for each of us, a newly sharpened pencil and a sharpie. I was incredibly impressed with the level of detail that went into this workshop. You could tell they were into it, which made me even more excited to be in a room with all of these incredible people!

The Metropolitan group walked us through 3 clients they have worked with, and they talked about everything from process, budgets and decision making to the amount of communication and time spent with the issue on hand and how becoming so familiar with it, and how that makes for a much greater end result.

IMG_1885DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day3

This workshop really shifted my thinking a bit, in terms of the direction I would like to not only see my some of work life go, but more importantly, my time away from work. The homeless community holds a special place in my heart, as my mother was homeless for quite some time before she passed and I have been looking to get involved with an organization here in Portland that works towards preventing homelessness. If any of you know of anything like that, here in town, please let me know! Thank you in advance!

The second event I went to today, was called Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:volution: The history of e-mail, which was put up on eROI.

This lecture was pretty much a history lesson of e-mail. Sounds like it might be boring, but it was in fact just as exciting as I hoped it would be! I have worked a lot in the e-mail world, and I just find it all to be very fascinating! The presenters (their lead designer & developer) were funny, smart and very relatable. It was so cool watching this clip, of Ray Tomlinson describe when he knew how impactful his invention of e-mail was.

DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day3_2IMG_1907

The third and final event I went to, was Design + Biomimicry: Applying Whole-(eco)Systems Thinking put on by Biomimicry for Creative Innovation at Hatch.

The venue that this was held had, is absolutely gorgeous! I got some good clips of it that should be in the video on Sunday, but holy cow! They even had an art installation hanging from the ceiling. Pretty cool!

Stefanie Koehler, who was the presenter, talked about how we as humans solve problems for other humans, by asking said humans, what their problem is and how they would like it to be solved. But how we do we solve problems in nature, if we cannot ask them what their problem is? The thing is, nature tends to create its own solutions that happen in a much more sustainable way. Stef is trying to bridge that gap between humans and nature, so we can solve problems in a more fluid and sustainable way. Pretty neat!

DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day3_3

She also said something, that I just absolutely loved, which related to the slide below. “Design isn’t ‘that thing you made’, it is about how you got there”.

DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day3_31

That wraps up day three! I had an incredible, eye opening day! Thank you so much for reading this and going on my Design Week journey with me!

Enjoy your day, see you tomorrow!

If you don’t know what Design Week Portland (DWPDX) is… basically, it is one week out of the year that design studios, makers, independent artists, etc, run shows, host lectures, open exhibits and so on, that the community can all enjoy and go to. This year, I believe there are over 200 events and over 120 open houses… all in one week! Insanity? yes. Brilliance? absolutely! You can see my tentative DWPDX schedule here.

The weekend started with an Opening Party on Saturday evening, tucked away in the industrial part of NW Portland. The party had everything from an Illustration photo booth (Where illustrators sat behind a two way mirror as we posed for 90 seconds), Salt & Straw ice cream, Local beer, cocktails and experimental design ideas all over the place. AKA, heaven.

DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_PhotoboothI had so, so, SO much fun! Met so many interesting people who are on a path of self discovery in their careers, others who are getting the word out about what they truly believe in with the work they are producing, and people who honestly make this community above and beyond amazing!

Day two kicked off the events and open houses. The first event I went to, was The History and Evolution of the Western Alphabet with the lecture and illustrations by Elizabeth Anderson of Anderson Krygier. She opened up the lecture by stating that typography was her passion and that it was very important for her for do something in her life that was directly related to her passion. I was already excited for the talk, but after she said that… I was SO sold! … and it only got better from there.

As Elizabeth was going through the evolution of the first few letters in the alphabet she mentioned –  “these marks are stories of daily lives”. And it made me pause and think for a moment. I sat back in my chair and thought deeply about typography and the alphabet, and she was absolutely right. Every single time, in history, that words, marks or hieroglyphics, are used… it is to tell a story. To get a point across.. that mattered, in that persons life, at that moment. Now, it might seem like… Duh Jehn. Of course that is how it is! But, sometimes (and maybe it is just me), I get caught up in life, I forget to think about why I am doing what I am doing… and in that moment, after Elizabeth said that. I really enjoyed taking that time to catch up with my thoughts and really put into context what she was teaching us today. Which was so much more, than just the evolution of the alphabet. It was about our lives and how we communicate with one another and how important that has always been to all of us. (That’s what I took from the lecture anyway!)

DesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day2_ElizabethAndersonDesignWeekPortland_JehnGlynn_Day2_ElizabethAnderson2

It was pretty magical and insanely beautiful watching her illustrate all of the marks and letters.

The second and final event I went to today, was to see the multi-talented Anton Kimbell talk all about his widely successful packaging, branding, letting and illustration career. If you are not familiar with his work, he has done logo and branding work for anyone from Nordstroms, Donkey Kong, Adidas, Lowes, JC Penny, and literally 200 other brands you know and love. Insanely talented. I said multi-talented earlier because he hand letters EVERY design he does and if there is any painting/illustration done on it, he did that by hand as well.

I walked into the office and was immediately drawn into all of the beautiful items he collects, the amount of books he houses and the overwhelming excitement, you could tell he had with all of us there.

He told me a story about how his teacher, once he graduated from design school, told him that he sucked and that there wasn’t a place for him in the current design world. He said he did not let it ever hold him back, he said he knew he didn’t suck and he just kept moving forward. Inspiring, transparent shit right there.

Screenshot 2014-10-06 00.30.00Listening to Anton talk, was a very eye opening and humbling experience. As he spoke about his process and how he gets from point A to point B, it was very similar in the way that I work. It was pretty neat hearing similarities like that! I think it is important, for us designers, entrepreneurs, and people in general, for us to remember, that everyone is a person and people are where they are because of hard work, passion, determination and sometimes luck. But that it is important to believe in YOURSELF and trust YOUR process in doing work and not following what everyone else is doing. I truly believe that is how success is formed and how us as humans can continue to breathe new energy and life into this world. Just imagine, if Anton listened to his teacher and didn’t follow his passions… his life would be completely different.

Portland Startup Weekend Access 2014 https://blog.jehnglynn.com/portland-startup-weekend-access-2014/ Thu, 10 Jul 2014 22:00:39 +0000 http://blog.jehnglynn.com/?p=1154

Hello :)

Is there something in your life that gives you that nudge to keep pursuing your passions? To continue working on your idea? For me, those nudges, come from seeing other people work on their ideas and following their passions.

A few weekends ago I attended Portland Startup Weekend Access as a design mentor. This Startup Weekend was different than the others I have been to. The weekend was being geared towards individuals with disabilities in hopes to create an environment where anyone can innovate together. Pretty sweet concept! During the weekend, Shashi, the facilitator, had expressed that he hopes that there will never have to be a separate event for individuals with disabilities again. That every Startup Weekend from here on out will be made to accommodate everyone. Inspiring stuff! Nudges all around! :)

I knew I wanted to bring my camera along with me, so that is what I did! I was able to capture some clips that I felt conveyed the vibe of the entire weekend; exciting, fun & encouraging! Going to events like this really inspires me to continue working on my passions and my ideas. What gives you inspiration? What nudges you? Let me know in the comments below!

I went to Pitchlandia 2014 + Vlog! https://blog.jehnglynn.com/i-went-to-pitchlandia-2014-vlog/ https://blog.jehnglynn.com/i-went-to-pitchlandia-2014-vlog/#comments Sun, 01 Jun 2014 19:55:29 +0000 http://blog.jehnglynn.com/?p=1131

If you don’t know, Pitchlandia was this week here in Portland, OR! It was the world’s first crowd-funded & crowd-selected Startup Pitch event. I am always a sucker for Startup events in general – I always leave feeling energized with a new sense of purpose for ‘doing my own thing’. Which is a very addictive feeling! This event in particular sparked my interest because the audience, who helped fund the event, had control of who won and who took the money home. There were 20 pitches total (I show clips of some of my favorite highlights in the video below*), 10 pitches were Tech and 10 were tangible products, which was a nice change up. I think it is easy to get stuck in the ‘tech bubble’ in the Startup World, so it was very refreshing!

One of the guys pitching, Jay Wallace, is a good friend of mine & earlier this year I had the chance to work on his logo with him for Bubblr. It was pretty cool seeing my logo up on the big screen!

I want to start making videos/vlogs about these type of events, not only to document what I am doing in my life that I can look back on, but in the hopes that someone can stumble upon this video & see other people following their dreams, being doers & getting shit done to make the life they want for themselves & to feel inspired and motivated to do the same! If you want to do it, you can! Sometimes you need a nudge though… and I am hoping videos like this are that nudge that you might need. :)

Enjoy! Thank you for reaching + watching!

Do Something Scary & Trust Your Gut https://blog.jehnglynn.com/do-something-scary-trust-your-gut/ Sat, 21 Sep 2013 00:52:21 +0000 http://blog.jehnglynn.com/?p=893

I woke up this morning knowing my first hack day was upon me. I have been looking forward to this event for some time now, but this morning.. I just wasn’t feeling it. and I felt a couple different ways; Sick, worn out and not wanting to get out of bed. Wishing I was going to the talks that were happening during TechFestNW today instead of the hack day and overall conflicted on what to do.

My approach to many things in life is to “go with what feels right.” My theory is, If you listen to yourself and are aware of what your gut is telling you – you will know what the right thing is to do. I knew I had to do the hack day, but I was really mentally trying to sway my thoughts the other direction. I didn’t feel well, was bummin’ about the talks & in all honestly… I was kind of scared. I have an idea of what a hack day is all about, but… do I belong at one? Am I going to fail?

While getting ready, I thought about my goals for today
1: Meet new people
2: Learn something new
3: Put myself in a new situation that might be slightly uncomfortable.

Going to listen to the talks happening today would probably only fall under #2. You rarely make solid connections during a series of back to back talks. Being involved in the hack day fell under all 3 goals. #1 – At events like this, you have the opportunity to meet tons of new people. You also get to collaborate with others – which falls directly under goal #2 – learning. I was also very interested in understanding hack days in general, so that is a bonus. Let’s be honest… going to events alone is always slightly uncomfortable… & that falls under #3.

While debating what to do this morning, I naturally played around on my phone for a while – I hopped on twitter and this is the first tweet I see:

Now, if that is not a sign from the universe.. I don’t know what is. I, however, stayed true to rebelling against my gut… and now the universe. My plan was to go to the event and if I wasn’t feeling it, I would just leave. (I would have regretted not at least not trying.) I was one of the first people to arrive & I could have easily just walked away. But I saw someone sitting by themselves & I decided to say hi. We ended up chatting for 10-15 minutes and it was great (Hey Scott!).

Hack day was beginning, so I sat down at the long table and introduced myself to everyone around me. Doing that tends to help me feel more comfortable and I am sure others as well.

Hack Day NW

The event was held at OMSI

The companies gave their pitches, then groups were formed and all was falling into place. Or, that is what was supposed to happen anyway. I sat there, completely clueless, unsure of what to do. A few people kind of joined teams, others sat looking puzzled, some got on their phones & a couple people even straight up left and never returned. This guy, Dan was going to get coffee, so I went with him in an effort to not feel so out of place & to maybe still make a quick exit to the talks. We got coffee, some food and really took our time getting back to begin working. Dan got caught up in a conversation, so I left him and walked back to the room.

I didn’t see the team I was interested in joining, so I walked out – ready to bail on the entire event – but my gut was screaming at me to stay. I took a deep breath, turned back around – saw someone from one of the companies walking my way & asked if they needed a designer on their team. They lead me to the group & to my surprise they were looking for me and was hoping I would join their team! The next 5 hours I rarely thought about the talks & throughly enjoyed my time. I cannot wait to do another hack day, I left feeling so inspired and energized! We even won tickets to next years TechFestNW, this years Lean Day West & a got sweet t-shirt from Mandrill!

Thanks Mandrill!

Thanks Mandrill!

Today I not only listened to my gut, but I also pushed myself into doing something that felt scary to me. The best part? It totally paid off & I met all of my goals!

1. I met new people – I actually made friends & true connections.
2. I learned new things, like how great JSfiddle is.
3. I put myself in a new situation and now I am more than excited to do my next Hack Day… & I bet I won’t feel nearly as uncomfortable.

What has paid off due to you trusting your gut?

Thank you for reading,
Muchlove,
Jehn

Self-Publishing Hangout Takeaways + Links https://blog.jehnglynn.com/self-publishing-hangout-takeaways-links/ https://blog.jehnglynn.com/self-publishing-hangout-takeaways-links/#comments Tue, 27 Aug 2013 04:41:15 +0000 http://www.jehnglynn.com/?p=569

Tonight I had the pleasure of listening & joining in on the conversation of the accomplished designers, podcasters, bloggers & e-bookers;  Sacha Greif, Nathan Barry, Paul Jarvis + Justin Jackson during their the Self-Publishing Hangout. Being a freelance designer myself, the entire experience was inspiring, motivating and insanely informative – I felt very lucky being in that room.  See the full event details here: Self-Publishing Hangout.

The hangout in a nutshell was the four guys chatting about their self-publishing experiences via video while us chat-roomers followed along, had our own discussions and interacted with the guys as well – they were great about answering our questions! They even answered one of mine & I won a t-shirt from Gumroad! Thank you!!

I listened, took notes and was a “sponge” during the hangout & below are a couple of my key takeaways:

  • Drink wine or mimosas to get over writers block.
  • If you want to write a book or even want to start blogging more, be aware of what people are asking of you – people are looking at you as an expert.
  • If you are hired for a job, you are enough of an expert. If you are getting paid for it, other people will pay to learn it.
  • Start writing & use that to get better at writing.
  • Write to a specific person to get over writers block.
  • Set deadlines.
  • Build an e-mail list.

Watch the entire hangout here: Self-Publishing Hangout

While taking notes, I made a list of the numerous companies, people, books, etc. that I wanted to look further into/make note of & I figured I should share them with you! (I know I missed some, please feel free to add them in the comments if you were there as well and I will update my list).

It was truly inspiring listening to these guys talk so humbly and openly about their experiences around self-publishing, both positive & negative. One thing they all touched on multiple times is that they write about what they do…what they love to do. It has inspired me to keep going in the direction of doing what I love.

Thanks again guys, you rock!

Muchlove,

J
