Disclaimer: It is design week and I hope I will be able to articulate myself well in these posts. Due to my high energy and overall excitement about the events, these posts may seem a bit over the top, full of emotions and as a whole… will probably contain a ton of exclamation marks. Let’s just say… you have been warned.

Tonight I went and saw Stefan Sagmeister do this talk on happiness. I have seen him talk a bunch of times on happiness, but only through videos online. Even though his content was pretty much the same… it was what happened after the show that was the most magical.

But first, on with the show. Well, let me back up… I have been a fan of Stefan for a very very long time. I am semi obsessed with album art and Lou Reed, and when I learned he did art work for Lou Reed back in in 1996, I was instantly hooked. The album was full of handwritten typography that I could just not get enough of. So, it was really cool getting to meet someone whose work you have been paying attention to for years.

Ok, now on with the show.

Holy shit. It’s only Tuesday? That means three more days of feeling the way I am feeling right now (enlightened, exhausted and excited… all at once)? THE THREE E’S? I’M IN! *thumbs up!*

Tonight I attended Curiosity Club Panel Discussion “This is It – Or is It? “ at Hand-Eye Supply

I did not even tweet during this event, because I was so fixated on every word the panel was saying. I, however, filled my notebook with quotes after quotes after quotes. Which I am going to share with you!

Whoa. Today was a busy day! THREE events! I am feeling a bit tired, but am excited to share with you my day… and what an eye opening, shift thinking, type of day it was!

The first event I went to was “Designing for Social Change” put on by The Metropolitan Group.

I got a little lost finding the place and while I was struggling looking at my map, someone comes up to me and asks “are you looking for The Metropolitan Group?”. I was so thankful she spoke up, because we quickly found where we needed to go. Once we got to our final destination, the desk asked us our names and I said “Jehn Glynn, G-L-Y-N-N”. And the girl who I met outside looked at me and goes “So, this might be creepy, but my name is Kristen & I follow you on twitter. I participated in your #heyjehnlook project on your last typography video!” I wanted to give her a hug. She was the first person, who wasn’t in my family, who participated in that project and it really meant a lot to me. Right after Kristen and I finished gushing and laughing about meeting twitter friends in real life, some guy says “not to add to the creepiness… but I am the voice behind DWPDX. You sent me the direct message yesterday and we communicated,” So funny! Met two twitter friends today! I knew after that, i was ready to take on the day!

My TECHFESTNW Experience!

Hey guys!

How are you? I hope your week is going well so far! In this video I not only talk to you about my TechFestNW 2014 experience, but I share a little story with you about how I overcame my fears. Being scared to do something can be a bit overwhelming and nerve wrecking – but something I have learned is that feeling won’t last forever. Whatever you are doing that is scary, will eventually end, and you will be so proud of yourself for going through it… and THAT feeling will last forever!

I really hope you enjoyed this video! If you did, make sure you hit the like button so I know that you did like it & make sure you hit subscribe, so you can keep up to date with other videos I put out!

Portland Startup Weekend Access 2014

Hello :)

Is there something in your life that gives you that nudge to keep pursuing your passions? To continue working on your idea? For me, those nudges, come from seeing other people work on their ideas and following their passions.

A few weekends ago I attended Portland Startup Weekend Access as a design mentor. This Startup Weekend was different than the others I have been to. The weekend was being geared towards individuals with disabilities in hopes to create an environment where anyone can innovate together. Pretty sweet concept! During the weekend, Shashi, the facilitator, had expressed that he hopes that there will never have to be a separate event for individuals with disabilities again. That every Startup Weekend from here on out will be made to accommodate everyone. Inspiring stuff! Nudges all around! :)

I knew I wanted to bring my camera along with me, so that is what I did! I was able to capture some clips that I felt conveyed the vibe of the entire weekend; exciting, fun & encouraging! Going to events like this really inspires me to continue working on my passions and my ideas. What gives you inspiration? What nudges you? Let me know in the comments below!

I hope you enjoy the video! Oh & the video doesn’t show this… but a team lead by an 11 year old won. #nudge #nudge #nudge

Here is another video to give you more nudges :)

Thank you for reading & watching!

I went to Pitchlandia 2014 + Vlog!

If you don’t know, Pitchlandia was this week here in Portland, OR! It was the world’s first crowd-funded & crowd-selected Startup Pitch event. I am always a sucker for Startup events in general – I always leave feeling energized with a new sense of purpose for ‘doing my own thing’. Which is a very addictive feeling! This event in particular sparked my interest because the audience, who helped fund the event, had control of who won and who took the money home. There were 20 pitches total (I show clips of some of my favorite highlights in the video below*), 10 pitches were Tech and 10 were tangible products, which was a nice change up. I think it is easy to get stuck in the ‘tech bubble’ in the Startup World, so it was very refreshing!

Do Something Scary & Trust Your Gut

I woke up this morning knowing my first hack day was upon me. I have been looking forward to this event for some time now, but this morning.. I just wasn’t feeling it. and I felt a couple different ways; Sick, worn out and not wanting to get out of bed. Wishing I was going to the talks that were happening during TechFestNW today instead of the hack day and overall conflicted on what to do.

Self-Publishing Hangout Takeaways + Links

Tonight I had the pleasure of listening & joining in on the conversation of the accomplished designers, podcasters, bloggers & e-bookers;  Sacha Greif, Nathan Barry, Paul Jarvis + Justin Jackson during their the Self-Publishing Hangout. Being a freelance designer myself, the entire experience was inspiring, motivating and insanely informative – I felt very lucky being in that room.  See the full event details here: Self-Publishing Hangout.
